De-icing with sodium chloride
Sodium chloride, or common salt, is a go-to solution for tackling icy paths, steps, and roadways. Its power lies in its ability to lower water’s freezing point, forming a brine solution that helps prevent ice buildup.
When applied to icy surfaces, sodium chloride dissolves into the thin layer of liquid water present on the ice. This releases sodium (Na⁺) and chloride (Cl⁻) ions, which disrupt the formation of ice crystals, keeping water in its liquid state even as temperatures drop. The resulting brine stays effective at temperatures below water's natural freezing point, providing reliable de-icing action.
While sodium chloride is affordable and widely used, it does come with limitations. It’s less effective in extreme cold, can lead to soil or water contamination, and may be corrosive to surfaces and equipment. For these reasons, alternative or complementary solutions might be worth exploring for specific applications.
