Rethinking demulsifiers: when performance meets sustainability

At Brenntag Energy Services, we know that separating water from oily emulsions isn’t just about efficiency – it’s about meeting today’s toughest environmental and regulatory demands.

Our team recently partnered with a client in western Europe, where local environmental regulations are particularly strict. The challenge? Developing a high-performance demulsifier that not only achieved superior separation but also came with no hazard pictograms on the label.

The result:

• 99.5% water separation in crude oil emulsions
• Salinity reduced below local authority limits
• Extremely clean water phase with ultra-low oil content
• A safer, regulation-friendly solution that exceeded expectations

What made the difference was our hands-on approach: bottle tests done onsite with the customer, followed by deeper lab investigations in our R&D center in Poland. This mix of practical testing and scientific rigor allowed us to tailor a solution that was both innovative and compliant. Our client has selected the recommended solution for further field tests and eventually replaced the previous product with our solution.
